Although we are commonly shown that Japanese writing should be done vertically, it is correct to do it both ways (vertical and horizontal). Although originally it could only be done vertically, with time the language evolved and nowadays both ways are correct.

But you must keep in mind that if a text is horizontal, the reading starts from left to right (as we normally do). But if the text is vertical, you should start reading from the top and from right to left.
